Jubilee Curry Workshop

The Amazing Mina from Kilmington’s Khushi Kitchen

The amazing Mina from Kilmington’s Khushi kitchen came and helped the children learn to make their own special Jubilee curry and mini chapattis so we could have a feast just like Mrs Kapoor in our core book Chapatti Moon. The children helped to chop vegetables, grate ginger, pound spices, tear coriander, spoon coconut milk and they listened as the vegetables sizzled. They smelt the spices and the garlic. Mina then showed them how to make chapatti dough and the children rolled their own mini chapattis. The chapattis were cooked in a hot pan and then we all shared the curry and breads.

Some children were initially worried about trying something new. But once the food was served all the children enjoyed eating chapattis and most liked spooning the delicious curry on to their chapatti and eating it. Some really loved the curry and kept remarking ‘I really like it!’

Mina was a fabulous teacher for the morning and we were very grateful to her for offering her time. Now the children really understand the story of chapatti moon as they too have shared curry and chapattis with friends.

Sunflowers

Lots of Lovely Sunflowers

Kingfisher class planted sunflower seeds to help with learning to write instructions.

They are growing nicely and ready to start measuring for maths.

Kingfishers Outdoor Learning

We had a lovely time building dens in small groups. We wrote out an instruction page to link with our current English learning of how to write instructions.

Kingfishers DT Cars

As part of this terms topic Kingfishers have made our own toy cars in DT. They spent play time racing them around the playground and even had an anonymous vote by Mrs White as to who’s was the best.

Floating & Sinking

Last term we explored floating and sinking so that we could make a boat to save the Gingerbread man. Each child chose a material they thought would float and one that would sink. We had lots of interesting conversations about trays with holes in that they thought would sink. They tested their materials in some water adding a person to test how well it would work for a boat. Great work Pipits!

Save the Gingerbread Man!

The children received a message from the Gingerbread man asking them to help him.
Some of the children decided to make boats out of paper. Mrs Brogan found some instructions and modelled how to follow the steps. Once the boats were made we tested them with a gingerbread girl but they all got wet and sunk. So we are going to have a think about what materials we can use to make a boat that floats.

Bring Your Wheels to School Day

As part of our topic on transport we had a ‘bring your wheels to school day’. Lots of children brought bikes, scooters, toy cars and roller skates and we enjoyed exploring different ways of getting about.

A Fun Week in Kingfishers

What a fun week had by Kingfisher class. We explored team work and structures at outdoor learning, creating dens that our whole team had to fit in.

Then on Thursday we had an exciting day dressing up as either our favourite character from a book or some children created their own characters. We had some lovely homemade costumes, some of which the children had made themselves. We then spent time writing stories based on this.

Finally, on Friday we were lucky enough to have a special science assembly to launch our new science club.

How do I get about?

Our big question last term was ‘How do I get about?’ and we have been learning lots about different ways of travelling.

As part of this topic we went on a ‘Try the train trip’ which was kindly supported by South Western Railway. We travelled with a community ambassador to Sherborne and visited Sherborne Abbey which is marvellous. The children were very excited to travel by train and it brought their learning to life.

Y3-Y4 Tag Rugby

On 16th February a squad of tag rugby players took part in a festival at Colyton Grammar School.  They had a wonderful time and learnt lots of good games that they are going to teach the rest of the class in their PE lessons!
