Forces & Gravity

Investigating the Theory

Ospreys are learning about forces, including gravity. We went outside to investigate the theory that “two objects of a similar shape, when dropped, will land at the same time”.

We used various balls from the PE shed, from sponge balls to medicine balls, and dropped them. Our partners had to get down to floor level to see if they did land at the same time.

Halloween

Halloween Theme Week

To launch the Halloween theme week the year 1 children investigated number lines, using finger painting to create their own pumpkin number line whilst the year 2 children made number bond broomsticks just to re-cap their number bonds before moving into their addition and subtraction unit. After this we continued the fun.

This terms DT topic was to make a puppet. We spent 2 days investigating, practising, designing and finally making our own Halloween finger puppets. Some children used sewing, some glue and some decided stapling was a convenient way of combining fabrics as this could also be used for the character’s features. We also explored using our fingers in different ways to create spiders on webs and paper pumpkins.

To complete the Halloween approach to the week we spent a day drawing and exploring different pencils and charcoals, as you can imagine we had a few sooty looking faces but we also had some amazing drawings at the end of the day.

Computing

Computing and Instructions

We combined the need to be able to follow instructions with understanding that computers only do what we as humans tell them to do. In pairs we had a controller and a robot, the robot could only do the exact movement the controller told them to do, as you can see this sometimes meant walking into walls.

The children absolutely loved doing this and it gave every child a chance to speak up.

English Autumn 2021

Year 1 Phonics

We have been going back over our phase 4 phonics sounds. We focus on a sound a day where we think of words independently which we then check the spelling of and discuss any rules surrounding the sound/grapheme of the day and then use them in a sentence. We often use this as an opportunity to edit sentences as a whole group.

 

 

English - Using our senses to create lists of adjectives

We went for an early morning walk to make the most of the amazing dew and fresh autumn sunshine. We were lucky enough to be able to see the webs all over the village cricket pitch as well as see the sun create a rainbow on the grass with the dew. We used this time to explore our senses and how this can help us describe, using adjectives.

 

Kingfishers - In the mirror I can see ...

To help us learn about adjectives we used mirrors to write about ourselves. The year 1 children wrote out different adjectives they could use to write about themselves, and the year 2 children used these in sentences.

 

 

Autumn days

An Autumnal Walk

 

To start our year long Science topic about the seasons we went for an autumnal walk to look at how the trees are turning at the beginning of autumn. We collected leaves and came back to the class to fill in our seasons diaries. Some children chose to do leaf rubbings from leaves they had collected whilst others wrote diary entries.

 

Vowels

Year 2 vowels revision

To help us learn and practice spellings we spent some time re-capping what a vowel is focussing on a, e, i, o and u being our main vowel sounds then we looked at the different graphemes we can use to spell those sounds and where we may see them in words.

Netball Instructions

PE - Team sports - Netball introduction

September 2021

We have started to practice some skills to enable us to play netball. The first step of this was to learn how to catch and aim using a target and getting the feel of the larger ball. We are now learning how to do bounce passes, land on one foot and move into spaces.

Using equipment to help solve reasoning questions

Maths language

The year 2 children spent the first part of the session having discussions about word meaning in Maths. We initially made sure we could read each word and then the children split off into groups to discover the word meanings, as they explored more the children began to group the words into similar meanings e.g. plus and add, minus, subtract and take away.

Thinking About the World

Where we are ...

As part of our homes topic, we have been thinking about where in the world we are and looking at maps. We read the wonderful book, ‘Me on the map by Joan Sweeney which starts with a child mapping their bedroom, then their house, then their street, town, county, country and then the world.

We explored aerial views of the area on google Earth. Some children were fascinated to find their home on the map. Later they had a go at mapping. Some using blocks and others drawing their room, street or home.
