In Pipit class each half-term we ask a ‘big question’. This question is designed to spark interest and further enquiry from the children around a broad theme. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and a range of high quality fiction and non-fiction texts are shared to deepen their understanding and provoke further enquiry. For each question there are some key facts and/ or knowledge which are clearly outlined in the knowledge planner for that terms question. These key facts are returned to regularly over the term helping the children to know and remember more.

In Pipit class children learn through a mixture of focused adult-led teaching sessions and periods of uninterrupted child-led learning. This opportunity to lead the learning enables children to practice and develop the skills they have been taught. At Kilmington we are passionate about the value of play for children’s learning and development. Play improves the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and young people. Through play, children learn about the world and themselves. They also learn skills they need for study, work and relationships such as:

• Independence

• Coping with challenging situations

At Kilmington FSU we have a workshop style environment indoors and outside. Minimum items are set out on the tables. The children select what they want to do in each area. The principal is that resources are accessible to the children, and they are varied, open-ended and high quality. This gives children the opportunity to select resources to support their chosen activity.

Whilst children are involved in self-directed learning (play) they move freely between indoor and outdoor areas using the resources which best meet their needs. The aim of both indoor and outdoor play is to provide a stimulating environment for children’s learning in all areas of the Early Years curriculum.

Outdoor play is essential for all aspects of a child’s development. As with indoor learning, the outdoor classroom can provide children with experiences which enable them to develop in the seven learning areas.

Our experienced teaching team are there to facilitate learning. They do this through observations, interactions, modelling skills, providing resources and assessing progress. Our adults get to know the children very well and have a sound understanding of child development. This ensures that the adults enhance and extend the learning at the appropriate level for each individual child.
